My husband and I were passing through Lytton on a motorbike and hiking holiday. We stopped at the cafe for a late lunch. Other than our table, there was only one other customer when we entered. On the TV behind us, a news show was broadcasting about viruses spreading due to poor hygiene in food preparation... appetising. We took our menus from a cheerless waitress and perused them hungrily. As drinks were not listed on the menu, we ordered a Pepsi or coke when the waitress came back over. She looked annoyed and asked if we wanted one of each. When she returned, we ordered a three topping omelette (comes with hash browns and toast) and a turkey bacon club with a Caesar salad (at a surcharge). Wordlessly, a different waitress came to set up the table sometime later. She was equally, if not more cheerless than the first. The food wasn't terrible. It equally wasn't great. My omelette and hash browns (more akin to an anaemic rösti) had more grease than flavour, but was edible as a hungry traveller. My husband's club was better, though the turkey was just sliced sandwich filler and the surcharged Caesar was underwhelming and small considering the price. Overall, it was a fairly frosty meal, despite the 37 degree heat outside. As hungry travellers, the food was necessary rather than satisfying and we walked away with a lingering scent of old grease on our clothes and skin. We have been fortunate on our travels so far to experience the well-known hospitality of Canadians in the British Columbia region. This unfortunately was absent here.
