My wife and I were looking for a sandwich shop to grab a quick lunch after visiting Gunston Hall, the colonial home of George Mason, one of the founders of our country. Friends who live in the Washington, D.C., area tipped us off to Gunston Deli. Good tip. Located at 7025 Newington Road in Lorton, Virginia, which is 20 miles southwest of the nation's capital via I-395, it offers breakfast and lunch from 5 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Breakfast is very popular among commuters. But we were anxious to grab a sandwich on our way back to Washington, D.C., and Gunston Deli hit the spot. My wife chose one of the deli's signature sandwiches, a Reuben with grilled corned beef topped with melted Swiss cheese, sauerkraut and 1,000 Island dressing on toasted rye bread. I was wooed by another one of the deli's signature sandwiches, the Jonathan Sweet, grilled roast beef and turkey breast with melted provolone cheese topped with lettuce, tomato and 1,000 Island dressing. With French fries. In fact, I was so impressed that I couldn't resist without leaving with an eight-inch Metro Cold Cut Sub filled with ham, bologna, salami and pepperoni. With a slather of mayo. I munched on the short drive back to the city, then finished it off while watching a basketball game on TV. It only proves that you never know where your next good meal is coming from.
